A box office analyst says to expect a Sonic the Hedgehog 2 announcement with Miles "Tails" Prower in tow.

After the Sonic the Hedgehog movie made over $300 million at the worldwide box office, a sequel was inevitable. Given that its mid-credits scene featured an appearance by Sonic's sidekick Tails, it was similarly unavoidable that a followup would likely feature Tails.

"A sequel is imminent for Paramount Studios, who desperately needs new franchises...I’d expect an announcement as soon as the world starts spinning in a direction we all recognize again," box office analyst Jeff Bock told USA Today. "Video game adaptations are definitely hot properties again in Hollywood thanks to Sonic and his box office antics." These remarks were coupled with comments by director Jeff Fowler, who noted there are "so many more great characters to bring in and just more stories to tell" while discussing Tails' cameo.

Fully introducing Tails in a Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel would mirror how the beloved character was first introduced in the Sonic video games. Debuting in the 1992 Sega game Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tails was not always a part of Sonic's world. However, he quickly became an indispensable companion to the speedy blue hedgehog. In the nearly 30 years since he first appeared, Tails has been a prominent player in a myriad of further Sonic games and has also gone on to appear in an assortment of television cartoons and comic books.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, with James Marsden, Neal McDonald, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell. The film is now available on Digital HD and 4K UHD, and it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD May 19.
