Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Knuckles doesn't have a "sexy" voice -- not according to Idris Elba, anyway.

The actor, who is voicing the red echidna in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, avoided spilling any details about the film's plot during a recent interview with Screen Rant, noting, “Honestly, I cannot say. Contractually, I cannot say anything." However, as far as Knuckle's voice is concerned, Elba admitted, "But I wouldn't say he was sexy. I don't think I'm going for that. That's for sure.”

Created by Takashi Yuda, Knuckles has unusually spiked knuckles (hence his name) that allow him to climb walls and make him a dangerous fighter. 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduces Knuckles as a serious yet gullible character who the evil Doctor Robotnik tricks into battling Sonic and his pal Tails before Knuckles learns the truth and teams up with the game's heroes instead. He's appeared in numerous video games, comic books, and animated Sonic TV series since then but has yet to make his live-action debut.

That changes with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which picks up where the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie left things. Ben Schwartz is once again voicing Sonic for the sequel, with James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski), and Jim Carrey (Doctor Robotnik) reprising their roles from the original film. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will also pay off its predecessor's post-credits scene, with Tails arriving on Earth and seemingly looking for Sonic.

The film's quasi-official synopsis reads as follows: "After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands."

Jeff Fowler, also back from the first movie, directs Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from a script provided by returning writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. The film hits theaters on April 8, 2022.
