According to Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler, Doctor Robotnik was a difficult character to adapt for film, since he doesn't have much background in the video games.

"With Robotnik, there wasn't quite so much to pull from with the source material, because he is very moustache-twirly, and for the purposes of the film, we were trying to keep him a little bit more grounded," he told Digital Spy.

He went on to say that casting Jim Carrey helped a lot when it came to developing the character, saying, "It just felt like he [Carrey] really responded to the character in the most incredible way, and had so many ideas for how to develop him." He mentioned that Carrey added plenty of improvisation, which gave the editing crew plenty to work with for the final cut.

Like Doctor Robotnik from the Sonic video games, Jim Carrey's version will be an eccentric-looking character with an army of destructive robots. In a recently released clip, Sonic can be seen going head-to-head with the mustachioed villain.
