Sonic the Hedgehog's world continues to expand with a miniseries that will introduce new characters to IDW Publishing's Sonic universe -- Surge the Tenrec and Kit the Fennec.

Surge and Kit, respectively modeled after a a hedgehog-like animal which can be found in Madagascar and a fox native to the Sahara Desert, star in Sonic The Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome, a four-issue book. Described as a "duo of doppelgangers," the pair come from mammalian species similar to Sonic and Tales, and appear to be on a collision course with the heroes. Meanwhile, the evil scientist Dr. Starline, a former apprentice of Dr. Eggman who is keen on replacing his old mentor as a world conqueror, continues to carry out machinations that will likely embroil all four characters.

"I'm especially excited about this story since it's building upon the core fundamentals that led to Dr. Starline's creation as a character. Hardcore fans will pick up on the inspirations from across Sonic's gaming history immediately," said Ian Flynn, writer of the blue hedgehog's comic iterations since 2006. "New fans will get to experience some wild new villains in a story that accelerates us to the monumental Sonic the Hedgehog #50. It's a win-win for everybody!"

IDW editor David Mariotte said that Surge and Kit might "feel familiar at first" to longtime fans of Sonic and Tails, but would ultimately prove to be unique characters in their own right, while Sonic artist Thomas Rothlisberger added that the new miniseries would be "an electrifying ride, full of kinetic action and tragic revelations."

"I can't wait to see how Surge and Kit spark readers' creativity, and I'm ecstatic to be part of the team crafting their story," Rothlisberger said.

Imposter Syndrome #1, by Flynn and Rothlisberger with Mauro Fonseca and Evan Stanley providing variant covers, hits stores in November.
