Paul Rudd is reportedly one of the top contenders for the lead human role in Paramount's upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film.

According to That Hashtag Show, Paramount is eyeing Rudd for the role of Tom, a police officer who befriends Sonic and will most likely accompany the blue blur on his mission to thwart Dr. Robotnik's evil plans. Rudd is no stranger to genre films; his third Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance as Ant Man comes this summer in Ant Man and The Wasp.

Last fall, news got out that Paramount had acquired the film rights for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Later, the studio set a tentative release date of November 15th, 2019 for the adaptation of SEGA's Mario rival. While the majority of the plot of the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation remains a secret at this stage in production, the hybrid live-action/CGI film is expected to begin filming this summer.

Sonic the Hedgehog is the star of a video game series produced by SEGA. In the nearly thirty years since his first title, Sonic has appeared in dozens of video games across multiple systems. Sonic even appears in some installments of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros series. The hedgehog's rival status with Mario is highlighted in the SEGA/Nintendo crossover Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games franchise.

From a script by Patrick Casey and Josh Miller and directed by Jeff Fowler, Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog film does not yet have a release date.
