Sonic the Hedgehog has caused an end to Marvel's dominance over the annual box office results of superhero movies.

As noted on Reddit, Wikipedia's chart for Highest-Grossing Superhero Films By Year reveals that Sonic the Hedgehog and its $306.7 million worldwide box office gross makes it the biggest superhero movie of 2020. It is the first non-Marvel film to become the biggest superhero film of the year since 2008. The last non-Marvel title to accomplish this feat was The Dark Knight with $1.004 billion.

This achievement comes with a major asterisk. Specifically, 2020 is the first year since 2009 with no new Marvel Studios projects on the big screen. Previous MCU projects scheduled for release in 2020 like Black Widow and Eternals were delayed to 2021 following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Given the box office trajectory of recent MCU features, it's doubtful Sonic would have been able to maintain its status as 2020's highest-grossing superhero movie if Black Widow and Eternals had stayed on their initial release dates.

Additionally, Sonic the Hedgehog remains the highest-grossing video game film to date. Its success has led to a planned sequel, which is in the works and scheduled to debut on April 8, 2022.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, with James Marsden, Neal McDonald, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell. The film is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD.
