Paramount Pictures has released a number of hi-res still images from Sonic The Hedgehog 2's new big game TV spot, showcasing -- among other things -- Doctor Robotnik's (Jim Carrey) hulking Death Egg Robot.

First and foremost, however, Paramount shared an image of Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) himself quite literally coming face-to-face with his new rival, Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba). The second image, meanwhile, shows Sonic riding on the red biplane piloted by Miles "Tails" Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) as the Death Egg Robot looms large in the background. The third shows a visibly agitated Sonic getting ready for battle, while the fourth sees Knuckles riding a makeshift snowboard as fire engulfs the air behind him.

Piloted by the villainous Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, the Death Egg Robot first appeared as the final boss of the the 1992 Sega Genesis video game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (not to be confused with the upcoming film of the same name). The Death Egg Robot is the second of two bosses the player (as Sonic) must fight in the Death Egg Zone stage, the first being Mecha Sonic.

This final segment is exceptionally difficult in the original version of the game, as the player must beat both bosses without being given a single ring, meaning that taking a single hit will cause the loss of a life -- or a "game over" if the player has no lives to spare. That being said, certain re-releases of Sonic 2 have updated the Death Egg Zone to give players a few rings in between the two boss battles.

Following its initial appearance in 1992's Sonic 2, an upgraded version of the original Death Egg Robot was featured as the final boss of 2010's Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I. A completely redesigned Death Egg Robot later appeared as the final boss of 2017's Sonic Forces.

The sequel to the hit 2020 film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog, Paramount's Sonic 2 is slated for release on Friday, April 8. James Marsden reprises his role as Tom Wachowski, with Carrey reprising his role as Doctor Robotnik. Schwartz and O'Shaughnessey reprise their voice roles as Sonic and Tails, respectively.

The film's voice cast has a newcomer in the form of Elba, who voices Knuckles. Meanwhile, Tika Sumpter, Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Lee Majdoub, Tom Butler and Elfina Luk reprising their live-action roles as Maddie Wachowski, Wade Whipple, Rachel, Agent Stone, Commander Walters and the Secretary of Homeland Security, respectively. Additionally, newcomer Shemar Moore has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Sonic 2 evidently takes story cues from the 1994 video games Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, with Dr. Robotnik manipulating Knuckles into believing Sonic is his enemy. The live-action sequel follows Sonic and Tails as they try to recover the Master Emerald before Robotnik can get his hands on it.
