The release date for the highly-anticipated open-world game Sonic Frontiers may have leaked online.According to PlayStation Game Size, a listing for Sonic Frontiers was discovered in the backend of the PlayStation database. This registration for SEGA's supposed reinvention of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is recorded as releasing on Nov. 14, 2022. While this may be good news for fans hoping for more insight into the game, it's worth approaching the listing with a hint of speculation. It's possible that the specified launch date is a placeholder used by SEGA until it nails down a formal release.Related: Fantastic Unreleased Sonic the Hedgehog Cinematic Surfaces After 13 Years

While the discovered date may not be official, it does neatly line up with Sonic Frontier's original launch window. When the game's first trailer debuted during The Game Awards 2021, fans were pleased to see that it would arrive in "holiday 2022." While this isn't enough to confirm the leak's accuracy, it does lend some credence to the database listing.

Little is currently known about Sonic Frontiers, but fans of the Blue Blur are hoping that the game will revitalize SEGA's most iconic franchise. The next chapter in the long-running series will be the first Sonic the Hedgehog game to take advantage of an open-world setting, allowing players to blitz their way around the Starfall Islands. The game's map is reportedly gigantic, consisting of several different biomes that resemble many of the traditional Sonic the Hedgehog levels seen throughout the franchise

SEGA has yet to delve into the minutia of Sonic Frontiers, but the brief teaser trailer hints that players will be taking on gigantic creatures in what could be boss fights. A trio of robotic projectiles is also launched at Sonic, suggesting that Dr. Robotnik will serve as the game's main villain.

Sonic Frontiers isn't the only major production starring everyone's favorite lightning-fast hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to the 2020 feature film starring Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey and James Marsden, arrives in theaters on April 8, 2022. The first trailer for the film also debuted at The Game Awards 2021, highlighting Sonic's best friend Miles "Tails" Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba).

Sonic Frontiers will be available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
