The upcoming live-action/CGI film Sonic the Hedgehog will likely be top at the box office in its opening weekend, according to early predictions.

Variety predicts that Sonic should make around $40 million to $45 million in its opening weekend, beating out DC's Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, which may take second place at the box office.

Both Fantasy Island and The Photograph, which will both premiere alongside Sonic the Hedgehog, are expected to make much less than the video game-based film.

Sonic the Hedgehog experienced a major setback when internet backlash to the titular character's original appearance promoted a complete redesign. The redesign pushed Sonic's release date back several months and reportedly cost the studio around $5 million.

Ben Schwartz will voice the speedy blue hedgehog as he is transported from his home to Earth. Sonic will join small-town cop Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) as they try to stop the villainous Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from conquering the world with his army of weaponized robots.
