Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary is approaching, and Sega is kicking off the celebrations with a trailer that looks back at the Blue Blur's legacy.

The 30th anniversary trailer looks back at Sonic's history, starting with the first game in the series, Sonic the Hedgehog, which released on June 23, 1991 on the Sega Genesis in North America. The trailer also features glimpses at the other games in the series, as well as the comics, animated cartoons and the feature-length film.

In honor of the 30th anniversary, Sega will host a livestream on May 27 that will feature announcements for new "projects, partnerships and events." While nothing specific is confirmed, a leak by French retail site Sogamely listed Sonic Collection for the PlayStation 4, corroborating information leaked by insider Zippo, who said that Sega is planning a new video game collection for the anniversary. There is also a possibility that the livestream will include information regarding Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy announced that they were developing a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog back in May 2020. Jeff Fowler is returning to direct and Pat Casey and Josh Miller will once again write the script. The movie will delve deeper into the lore of the beloved video game franchise. Knuckles the Red Echidna and Tails are set to appear, and the sequel will reference the iconic helicopter scene from Sonic Adventure 2. Currently, Aquaman star Jason Momoa is rumored to be taking on the voice role of Knuckles, but nothing is confirmed. Tails was teased during the mid-credits scene of the first Sonic movie.
