Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director Jeff Fowler celebrated the completion of filming on the video game film sequel with a BTS photo that teases a new location.

Fowler shared the photo on Twitter, which has him sitting in a field of tall mushrooms. The picture seemingly offers a glimpse at another dimension, where at least part of the film's story will take place. "That's a wrap in Vancouver! Thank you to all the amazing cast/crew in this city... so much incredible talent helping make [Sonic the Hedgehog 2] truly special (and spoiler alert... EPIC!)," Fowler wrote.

Principal photography for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 began just two months ago. The film still has a long way to go before it is ready for its April 8 debut, as many of the characters have to be inserted using CGI and special effects.

Plot details about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remain scarce, but the movie will delve deeper into the lore of the beloved video game franchise. Knuckles the Red Echidna and Tails are set to appear, and the sequel will reference the iconic helicopter scene from Sonic Adventure 2.

Knuckles' appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been rumored since late 2020. According to those reports, the character will have a significant role in the film. Furthermore, he will have the ability to glide and climb walls with his spiked hands, similar to his skills in the video games. Paramount Pictures is looking to cast a voice actor who is "serious in nature, but still gullible at times." Currently, Aquaman star Jason Momoa is rumored to be taking on the voice role, but nothing is confirmed. Tails was teased during the mid-credits scene of the first Sonic movie.

Released in February of 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog follows the Blue Blur (voiced by Ben Schwartz) as he fights to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from taking over the world. The movie opened to $70 million over the four-day President's Day weekend, earning the largest opening for a video game-based film. It ended up bringing in a total of $319.7 million worldwide off an $85 million budget.

Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy announced that they were developing a sequel to the hit film adaptation of the popular video game franchise back in May 2020. Fowler is returning to direct and Pat Casey and Josh Miller will once again write the script.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stars Ben Schwartz. The film arrives in theaters April 8, 2022.
