The original design for Sonic in the 2020 film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog is responsible for more than its fair share of memes among the community. One creative fan  showcases that while the initial version didn't make the final cut, the sequel could have looked very different if otherwise.Twitter user @PleaseBexcited posted an altered image of the new poster for the upcoming film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The changes are quite noticeable, with Sonic's face replaced by the earlier CGI version of his character, along with Tails completely substituted for an image of the Stoned Fox meme, which originated from a taxidermied animal and has made numerous rounds in Russia. @PleaseBexcited simply described the post by writing, "What could have been."RELATED: How Sonic the Hedgehog's Worst Enemy Made Him Blue

The tweet is now garnering the amusement of many fans, even growing to rival the official poster itself in terms of engagement. Some joined in on the joke, replying with increasingly distorted versions of Knuckles and Dr. Robotnik to round off the film's cast. @PleaseBexcited also commented a screenshot of the uploaded poster from the official Sonic the Hedgehog film Twitter account, showing just how close he was trailing behind. "If my ridiculous Photoshop somehow overtakes the official post, it'll be my greatest achievement."

Sonic the Hedgehog is a film based on the video game series of the same name. It became the highest-grossing superhero film of the year, earning a worldwide total of $319.7 million, dethroning Marvel's decade-long reign over the genre. A sequel for the film has since been announced, with Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey reprising their roles as Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, respectively. Colleen O'Shaughnessey is reprising her video-game role of Miles "Tails" Prower in a live-action format. Rumors also circulated that Jason Momoa was being considered for the voice of Knuckles the Echidna, but the role was eventually confirmed for Idris Elba.
