Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has found its Tails.

Colleen O'Shaughnessey, the longtime voice of Sonic's faithful furry friend, will return to play him in the sequel to the 2020 film. O'Shaughnessey announced the news on Twitter, saying, "Taking my old pal Tails for another adventure. Thrilled to announce I'm the voice of Miles 'Tails' Prower in [Sonic the Hedgehog 2]! Can't wait for y'all to see him on the big screen."

Tails first debuted in the 1992 video game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and has since gone on to become a perennial recurring character in the franchise. A fox who got his nickname from his abnormal pair of twin tails, the character is depicted as Sonic's closest friend and biggest admirer, as well as a mechanical genius and ace pilot whose skills have been invaluable to the Blue Blur over the years. While several actors voiced Tails in different games and tie-in material, O'Shaugnessey has played the character since the 2014 series Sonic Boom, including his brief appearance in the post-credits stinger from the first Sonic movie.

O'Shaughnessey isn't the only new actor joining the sequel. It was announced in August that Idris Elba will be voicing Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 2. Both Tails and Knuckles' roles were confirmed for the sequel in May 2021 after the official synopsis was released, with Tails joining Sonic as his sidekick, and Knuckles joining forces with the evil Dr. Robotnik. The film will follow the characters as they try to track down a powerful emerald with "the power to both build and destroy civilizations."

First appearing in 1994's Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles is a strong fighter with a standoffish personality, though ultimately a noble heart. When interviewed about playing the character, Elba was tight-lipped about the details. "Honestly, I cannot say. Contractually, I cannot say anything...But I wouldn't say he was sexy," Elba said. "I don't think I'm going for that. That's for sure."

Actors returning for Sonic 2 include Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic himself, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as his friends Tom and Maddie Wachowski and Jim Carrey as arch-villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore will also have a role in the film, though it's unknown who he's playing at this time.

Director Jeff Fowler will return for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as well, from a script written by returning writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 zooms into theaters on April 8, 2022.
