Paramount+ and Paramount Home Entertainment have set release dates for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on streaming, Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD.

Subscribers to Paramount+ won't have to wait long to enjoy the film, as Sonic 2 premieres on the platform on Tuesday, May 24. Fans who aren't Paramount+ members needn't worry, however, as the film will be available on Digital to rent or buy. For those interested in a physical copy, Blu-ray and other formats will release on Aug. 9. Meanwhile, a two-movie bundle with both Sonic the Hedgehog and the sequel will be available on Digital and Blu-ray.

According to Paramount, Sonic-lovers who purchase the movie in a physical or digital format "will find they are packed with nearly an hour of bonus features, headlined by an all-new, exclusive animated short entitled Sonic Drone Home featuring Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles." Paramount also wants to remind fans of the imminent release of Sonic Origins, a compilation of the video games that "started it all." Sonic Origins releases on June 23 on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox systems, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Sonic 2 was greenlit shortly after the success of the first film in 2020. It continues the adventures of SEGA's iconic blue hedgehog in his new home of Green Hills, The sequel brings in more of Sonic's friends and enemies from the video games, with the introduction of Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, and Tails, voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey. O'Shaughnessey also voices Tails in multiple video games and animated series, and fans were elated when the character appeared in the initial trailer. "People jumped out of their seats, literally," O'Shaughnessey said. "They were on their feet, jumping up and down, and screaming. It was so exciting. Who knew?"

The sequel was even more successful than its predecessor, with SEGA and Paramount announcing in May that Sonic 2 had become the highest-grossing video game-to-movie adaptation of all time. The sequel premiered on April 8 and far surpassed the first film with a $72.1 million opening weekend. To date, the movie has pulled in over $330 million at the global box office, but that number is sure to improve as the film doesn't premiere in Sonic's home country of Japan until Aug. 19.

Even more Sonic-related content is on the way with confirmation of a spinoff series for Knuckles as well as a third movie in the franchise. Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon, stated that his teams "are thrilled to stretch the limits of what [Sonic] is capable of with world-class offerings on both the big screen and for Sonic fans at home." In line with that strategy, Netflix also has a 3D-animated Sonic series arriving in 2022.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 arrives on Paramount+ and Digital May 24 and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD Aug. 9.
