Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will follow the events of the 2020 film and will introduce both Knuckles and Tails, the latter of which only appeared during a post-credits scene in the original film. Ben Schwartz will reprise his role as Sonic for the sequel, as well as James Marsden as Sonic's human friend Tom Wachowski and Jim Carrey as the evil Doctor Robotnik. The film will also feature the voices of Idris Elba as Knuckles and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails, who has voiced the character since the 2014 series Sonic Boom. A third Sonic movie already has already been greenlit, along with a Paramount+ spinoff series starring Knuckles.

According to the official synopsis, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will see Sonic attempt to thwart both Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles in their search for the Chaos Emerald, which has the power to "both build and destroy civilizations." Previously released posters and clips from the film have teased a number of references to SEGA's video games, including the Chaos Emeralds, which first appeared in the 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog game and have since become a staple of the franchise.

Director Jeff Fowler has stated that fans can expect the sequel to be "chock full" of Easter eggs and references to the original Sonic video games. "[A]s we were sort of setting out to plot [the Sonic 2 movie], I think we all got excited to pull in that great imagery that all of the fans are going to get excited about when they see it on the big screen and create a cinematic version of the stuff that fans have loved from [the games]," said Fowler. "It's a great problem to have that there's so many great Easter eggs that we can incorporate... I couldn't even begin to list them because there's so much stuff for fans to get excited about."

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 premieres in theaters on April 8, 2022.
