Star Wars fans went a long time without a teaser trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story; however, the film's full trailer is coming fast - set to debut during American Idol on Sunday, April 8th. The news came as a complete surprise - dropped in a tweet through the official Star Wars twitter. For a brief hour, confusion about when exactly the trailer would debut ran rampant - until the official release time was confirmed for American Idol.

Of course, any time a trailer drops during a show or event, it's rarely known exactly which commercial break will contain the promo. The same goes for Solo: A Star Wars Story's full length trailer. The American Idol promo provides the show's 8pm ET/7pm CT showtime but it's highly unlikely ABC will come straight out with the trailer before making fans sit through a few minutes of the reality TV singing competition.

As ridiculous as an American Idol debut might sound to Star Wars fans, it makes complete sense when you consider that ABC is owned by Disney - and the Mouse House will be hoping that moviegoers of all ages and interests will turn out for the film. American Idol might not be the power-house it once was on TV but it still pulls in between 7 to 10 million viewers on average. That's a lot of people who could help Solo at the box office. Star Wars fans will, at least most fans, turn out for Solo - even out if for no other reason than morbid curiosity, so Disney is going to be spending a lot of time (and marketing money) the next month appealing to potential ticket buys outside established fandom.

For all the controversy surrounding the exit of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the first Solo movie teaser went a long way in convincing fans that Ron Howard might have succeeded in reorganizing the production - and setting the film on a successful track. After what happened with Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon with Justice League, it's understandable that some Star Wars fans will remain skeptical of the last-minute the change-up until the film lands in theaters. Hopefully, at a time when fandom is divided on whether or not Lucasfilm is successfully reinventing or outright ruining Star Wars, Solo can be a fun palate cleanser - one that, like the lovable scoundrel at its center, might turn out to be something really great (in spite of its rough-around-the-edges first impression).
