Two of the opening scenes of Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) from the new trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story focus on the smuggler's pistol resting comfortably on his hip. The first comes as Han faces off in a Western-style showdown against gangsters on a sandy beach, with the second coming as he enters a dark room with a gambling table.

The blaster is a weapon that's followed Han throughout the Star Wars franchise, from his introduction in 1977's A New Hope to his death in 2015's The Force Awakens. The pistol remains at the center of the never-ending "Han shot first!" debate.

But how did Han come to acquire his trusty blaster? Did he win it in a similar fashion to the Millennium Falcon, or was it stolen on one of Han's numerous smuggling operations? Thankfully, Solo's first full-length trailer finally answers this lingering question.

Kiss Your Gun Goodbye

Solo: A Star Wars Story

In the trailer, Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) delivers a voiceover in which he tells Han how a big-time gangster is putting together a crew for a job. Next, we see Han back up his statement of how he's a driver and a flier as he takes control of various ships and speeders. Han's been waiting a long time for a shot like this, so Tobias shows faith in his young mentee by taking his own DL-44 heavy blaster pistol, giving it one last kiss, and tossing it to Han.

Although Han would go on to make slight modifications to the blaster (of course), that he never replaced it goes to show how much trust he had in the weapon. We'll have to see how the relationship between Tobias and Han plays out in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but another thing to keep in mind is the blaster could hold sentimental value, as long as Tobias doesn't turn his back on the future Rebel Alliance General. After all, the one piece of advice Tobias gives Han is to assume everyone will betray you, and you'll never be disappointed.
