Solo: A Star Wars Story Introduces Three New Types of Stormtrooper

Among other pieces of new information, the second official Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer that dropped over the weekend offers a nice, clear look at a new kind of Stormtrooper.

Now, as cool as these new Troopers look, they aren't the only new soldiers the Empire will be sending after Han and his new friends. Below, we offer a quick rundown of all the new classes of Trooper the spinoff film will introduce to Star Wars canon: Ranger Troopers, Mudtroopers and Imperial Patrol Troopers.

Ranger Trooper

This is the kind of Stormtrooper we saw in the new trailer. Their white leather trench coats seem to be a callback to the Snowtroopers from Empire Strikes Back, though the Ranger helmets are more in line with the Scarif Stormtroopers from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Regardless of where the design draws its inspiration from, these soldiers are obviously trying to stop Tobias Beckett and his team (which includes Han and Chewie) from pulling off a train heist in the trailer.

However, we learn even more about the Ranger Troopers from the packaging of a Star Wars: The Black Series six-inch action figure. "The Imperial expansion requires the settlement of vital operations on remote worlds," the description reads. "These frontier Stormtroopers form a backbone of stubborn defense against would-be thieves and pirates." Sounds like the kind of responsibility that definitely requires some fur.

Mud Trooper

We see this kind of Stormtrooper in the new trailer, too -- but only for a split second, and not as clearly as the Rangers. The Mudtrooper has been rumored since unknown actors Daniel Prewitt and Nathaniel Lonsdale listed themselves as such on Solo: A Star Wars Story’s IMDb page months ago. When the film’s LEGO sets leaked, a muddy looking minifig labeled "Mimban Stormtrooper" seemed like confirmation of this new variety of Trooper, and revealed the planet they are stationed on.

Here’s where it gets interesting, though; last week, Topps trading cards from a Denny’s promotion revealed that Mudtroopers are, in fact, their own grouping, with their own uniform. Further, the helmet, goggles, chest piece and cape of this get-up look similar to those of the Han Solo’s mini figure from the same LEGO set mentioned above. We know Han signs up with the Empire and fights on Mimban, so it’s not a huge leap of logic to guess he’s a Mudtrooper, or at least poses as one.

Furthermore, the recently released Black Series six-inch action figure of the Mimban Stormtrooper makes it clear they're likely just regular Stormtroopers covered in dirt and debris. Although, like the Mudtroopers, they do have capes.

Imperial Patrol Trooper

Last but not least, we have the soldier we see chasing Han on his home world of Corellia in the first trailer. These Patrol Troopers ride a brand new type of speeder bike. Their helmets look like a more aerodynamic take on the classic Stormtrooper bucket, but their armor resembles Scout Trooper gear.

Now, we're all for new kinds of Troopers, but this seems like a bit of a missed opportunity as the filmmakers could have delighted fans by using the Imperial Combat Drivers and their 614-AvA speeder bikes from Season 1 of Star Wars Rebels.

Directed by Ron Howard from a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. They’re joined by Thandie Newton as Val, Phoebe Waller-Bridge L3-37, Paul Bettany as Dryden Vos and Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett. The film opens May 25.
