Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard weighed in on whether fans can expect a follow up to the 2018 Star Wars spinoff, revealing that there is still a good amount of interest in the film's characters.

"No rumblings, though, and this is not a spoiler or anything, but I think there is interest in those characters," Howard said during a guest appearance on the Lights Camera Barstool podcast. "I think there’s interest in the gangster world somewhere down the line. But I can assure you there is nothing being developed right now for a movie or Disney+. But, one great thing is there has been a lot of affection shown for Solo, and so of course that keeps boding well for them to eventually turn it around."

Sequel plans for Solo were abandoned after it became the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie of all-time, earning $393.2 million on a reported production budget of $275 million. Regardless of the film's lackluster performance, diehard Star Wars fans have called for a sequel on multiple occasions. Since then, many rumors have circulated, including the possibility of a Disney+ spinoff following Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian. The hashtag #MakeSolo2Happen trended on Twitter over the Memorial Day weekend, with users demanding a sequel. Even so, Howard has maintained that there are no plans for a sequel, adding the caveat that it was "amazing to be a part of a Star Wars movie that seems to be a kind of underground hit."

Directed by Ron Howard and from a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Joonas Suotamo, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michael K. Williams and Woody Harrelson. The film is available to stream on Disney+.
