WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Solar Opposites, now available on Hulu.

Season 1 of Hulu's Solar Opposites doesn't really have a major villain as it follows the Rick and Morty formula of random adventures experienced by aliens crash-landing on Earth. This family bumbles through a series of unfortunate events, and for some reason, they just don't seem that interested in fixing their ship and leaving.

However, while their adventures are usually lighthearted, it gets a bit more serious in the terrariums Yumyulack linked together for humans he's shrunk over the months. This leads to "Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear," the penultimate episode of the season where the series finally gets a twisted villain due to a betrayal that doesn't bode well for the aliens.

The evil leader of the Wall

Yumyulack is rash with his shrink ray, sizing down humans for petty reasons, as seen with sushi waitress, Cherie, who gave him shrimp by accident. They've all been thrown into this ecosystem which turns into a dark post-apocalyptic reflection of society. The elites have built a Wall and are led by the Duke, a jab at Donald Trump's reign as U.S. president. As for Cherie, she's been recruited by the resistance and after Tim thought she died, she brings the freedom fighter into the fold.

Tim's been writing stories about how to get past oppression and has become a cult figure in a world where Jesse throwing candy and other items to the minions has become currency. They barter, use toothpicks as weapons, floss as rope in a dog-eat-dog world. Unfortunately, Duke has been hoarding and using his right-wing regime to create a realm that's not free and very discriminatory.

This leads to one final raid where Tim and Cherie lead the way. They've consummated their love and now, as emotionally connected as ever, they want to save everyone in this macabre world. It's not an easy revolution though, as Duke drowns quite a bit of the lower-class rebels, but eventually, after a bloody civil war, Tim and Cherie confront Duke. In the throne-room, a wounded Duke shocks everyone and flees through a hole in the wall, however, which he covered up to avoid people discovering there was a means of escaping Yumyulack's pet project.

Cherie inquires why he opted to stay and rule in this miserable realm, and as she indicates she's going to alert everyone, Tim stabs her. He has a crazed look in his eyes and as there's no one around, he throws her through the hole and to her death. It's way more gruesome than Duke who escaped on a bug, leaving fans wondering if she really is dead and just how could she make it back even if she escapes being a badly-damaged mite in the real world.

As for Tim, he makes his intentions clear as he's seen what Duke saw. As his cohorts come rushing in after he covers the hole up and gives a speech, he reveals he's going to take charge as the new Duke and course-correct things. It's stunning to see such an altruistic hero give into the dark side, but he doesn't know if Yumyulack might, at some point, bring them back to size in an act of mercy. Plus, if they leave, there's a chance they could die out there and he might even have a plan for revenge against the alien captors. He forgives Duke's old crew and installs a new regime, nonetheless, as finally, he's no longer a nobody. Ultimately, the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and with Cherie being the only one who knows his secret, Tim embraces his inner-villain as he loves the god people are making him out to be.

Starring the voices of Justin Roiland, Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack, the eight-episode first season of Solar Opposites is currently available on Hulu.
