DC Comics and writer Scott Snyder have big plans for the Justice League this fall. With the upcoming event arc "Justice: Doom War," the League will be reintroduced to the Justice Society of America.

The JSA was a popular group of heroes during the Golden Age of comic books and they were seasoned heroes who served as mentors to younger characters in more recent decades. The “New 52” reboot basically took them out of the DC Universe, though there were hints in Rebirth #1 that they might be coming back, and Doomsday Clock has been exploring Dr. Manhattan’s role in their disappearance.

As writer Scott Snyder told Newsarama, he’s planning to explore the origins of the original JSA.

“My sights are really set on the original team, their origins, what it meant to be the first superhero team in the 1940s. How morally ambiguous a time that was, as much as we think of it now, I think, as really black and white. How difficult it was to be a hero at a moment when the world was falling apart,” Snyder said.

Snyder went on to explain that he has personal connections to the storyline.

“It’s a passion project for me. My father was in the Air Force, and both my grandfathers were veterans. My maternal grandfather was in the Pacific theater from Pearl Harbor until pretty much the end of the war. So getting to talk about heroism during that period is very important to me," he said.

Despite his personal connection to the heroes, Snyder's plans for the Justice Society are still in line with his larger-than-life Justice League run.

"I’m very excited to reintroduce the characters here in this story, in a kind of big, bombastic way where they are reintroduced to the Justice League members themselves," Snyder said. "They re-connect and form that thread across time of memory and of legacy and all that stuff. But I'm also really excited to use this as a springboard for much larger plans for these characters as well."

The JSA will make their appearance in Justice League #31, by Snyder and Francis Manapul, on sale Sept. 4.
