Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder weighed in on the film's time loop theory and whether there's actual evidence for the idea.

The time loop theory is based on a scene that takes place about halfway through Snyder's zombie movie. Upon reaching the vault inside Bly Tanaka's abandoned Vegas casino, the safecracker Dieter and zombie war veteran Vanderohe discover a group of dead humans that are dressed a whole lot like the members of their team. Vanderohe speculates these are them from another timeline and they're caught in an infinite time loop of fighting and dying, over and over.

Discussing Army of the Dead for Netflix's Geeked Week, Snyder refused to rule out the time loop theory, stating "It might be true. Who knows?"

"There’s a lot of clues in [Army of the Dead] that would support that theory," Snyder added. "For instance, you see in that sequence, you see that there’s some skeletons in the vault there’s like a shot of each of them, and you see a shot of one of our characters, and they happen to be wearing the same necklace or the same -- it's them."

He went on to point out this isn't the only scene in Army of the Dead that supports this reading, noting "When they actually get in the casino there’s a set of plans, and Scott says Tanaka had other teams in here before us. If you notice, the dead guys around that table are them again. So if you wanna play that game, it’s there to play."

It's unclear if Snyder intends to explore the time loop theory in an Army of the Dead sequel, should it come to pass. The first movie is projected to become one of Netflix's top ten all-time most-watched Original films and already has a prequel movie and anime series in the works. However, a direct followup has yet to be announced.

Directed and co-written by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Raul Castillo, Tig Notaro, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer and Ana de la Reguera. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
