That 2013 movie, which starred Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, is itself based on Le Transperceneige, the 1982 post-apocalyptic French graphic novel by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.

Starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs, the 10-episode series is set seven years after an environmental catastrophe induced a planet-wide ice age, forcing the last remnants of humanity onto a 1,000-car train that travels the globe. A rigid class system forces the lower classes into the end of the train while the elite enjoy the relative luxury of the front, leading to a violent revolution.

“I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon Ho’s epic film, and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast,” Sarah Aubrey, TNT's executive vice president of of original programming, said in a statement. “Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”

Scott Derrickson (Marvel's Doctor Strange) directed the Snowpiercer pilot from a script by Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Bong and the film’s Dooho Choi and Chan-wook Park will serve as executive producers alongside Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements. No showrunner has been announced.
