It’s been five years since the second season of the well-loved fantasy romance anime Snow White With the Red Hair aired. Season 2 concluded in 2016 with a “happy but open” ending that inevitably left fans wanting more. There is still more love story to be told about the romance between Shirayuki and Prince Zen, which raises the question of whether a Season 3 will ever go into production.

Let's take a look at what Snow White With the Red Hair is about, and whether the anime could receive a highly anticipated third season.

The Plot & Origin of Snow White With the Red Hair

Snow White With the Red Hair is a fantasy romance shojo series by Sorata Akizuki that focuses on the life of Shirayuki and her relationship with Prince Zen. Shirayuki has a unique physical trait: her beautiful red hair. It gets noticed by the Prince Raj of Tanbarun, who asks her to be his concubine. Shirayuki escapes to the neighboring kingdom, Clarines, where she encounters Prince Zen Wistaria. He helps Shirayuki to get out of Prince Raj’s concubine proposal, and she decides to move to Clarines, where she becomes a court herbalist. Shirayuki and Zen eventually fall in love, despite those who frown upon their relationship because of their difference in social status.

As of this writing, Snow White With the Red Hair remains an ongoing series with 24 manga volumes published; 17 of those have been translated into English by Viz Media. The manga was adapted in 2015 by Studio BONES into an anime consisting (so far) of two seasons of 12 episodes each. Funimation licensed the series with subbed and dubbed versions. In addition, an OVA was produced separately from the anime, which adapts three chapters from the manga.

Will There Be a Season 3 of Snow White With the Red Hair?

Snow White With The Red Hair Love Triangles

There is no official word of a Season 3 for Snow White With the Red Hair. Even though the series was popular among fans, one possible reason for the lack of continuation is that the first two seasons and OVA didn’t make enough profit from Blu-ray and DVD sales. Another reason is that Studio BONES became focused on producing seasonal content for other popular series, such as My Hero Academia and Bungo Stray Dogs, resulting in the third season of Snow White with the Red Hair being brushed aside.

However, the manga is ongoing, so there is still more story to be told about the relationship between Shirayuki and Zen. The anime thus far has only covered up to Volume 8 of the source material. If there is a third season, it would likely focus on Shirayuki’s journey to the northern territory in the Kingdom of Clarines, where she and Ryuu begin researching and inventing new herbs. Zen decides to travel to the north as well after hearing some news.

Even though there is no news about Season 3, there also has been no official cancellation of Snow White With the Red Hair. Thus, fans can still hold on to hope.
