Based on historical samurai Jubei Yagyu, the longtime character features his namesake's signature lost eye. According to Japanese legend, he lost it in a training bout with his father before becoming one of the most storied swordsmen in the country's feudal history.

Set during 18th century Japan, the franchise follows various warriors from Japanese history and myths as they fight during a time of civil unrest sweeping across the country. The series was a mainstay on SNK's home console, the Neo Geo, before moving to the PlayStation and Dreamcast. The upcoming reboot was first announced at the end of last year and is the first main installment in the franchise since 2008's Samurai Shodown Sen.

Samurai Shodown is developed and published by SNK. It will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on June 25 and on PC, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia on an as-yet unannounced date.
