Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will be the start of a new G.I. Joe film universe, according to Henry Golding.

Golding broke down the film's first official trailer on ComicBook.com, noting that it was "mind-blowing" to be cast as the ninja commando. "It's a character that we've all loved, that we've all pretended to be on the playground," Golding said. "We've all snuck around the kitchen closet, waiting to jump out at our brothers and sisters. It's amazing to think that we're gonna have a new generation of kids fighting to be Storm Shadow or Snake Eyes on the playground, and I love that idea."

"I truly believe that how Paramount has really focused on one character to build out the universe is the correct way," Golding continued. "We need the groundwork. We need the structural integrity to build something awesome. And I think, with Robert Schwentke helming as director, he's given this cinephile feel to this film. It's not just an ordinary action film. There's so much heart, there's so much information that's sort of given to you in breadcrumbs that you're just left yearning for more."

The first teaser trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins debuted during the MTV Movie Awards and features Golding's Snake-Eyes training with the Arashikage ninja clan. In addition to revealing Snake Eyes' history with the Arashikage and his rivalry with Storm Shadow, the film will also reveal how he joined G.I. Joe. Paramount moved Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins to a July release date, as the film originally having been slated to debut in Oct. 2020.

Directed by Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Iko Uwais as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko and Tahehiro Hira as Kenta. The film arrives in theaters on July 23.
