Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura admitted in a new interview that he's not sure why the latest G.I. Joe film is being billed as a spinoff rather than a complete reboot of the franchise.

"I don't know how to answer that one," di Bonaventura told UPROXX. "Because I guess, I don't know. I don't know why that hasn't gotten out there." While di Bonaventura admitted it's probably too late to change the messaging for this particular film, he noted that "it's never too late" to rebrand the franchise moving forward.

During the same conversation, the producer also revealed why they decided to relaunch the G.I. Joe universe with the Snake Eyes character. "I think, first of all, as you know, really as a fan, Snake Eyes is the most popular character and the dynamic between him and Storm Shadow is just too rich," di Bonaventura said. "And we thought that for the people who've grown up with it and know it, it's such an interesting experience. Actually see Snake Eyes and hear him talk. And so we felt like that was really a lot of new news for the fan base."

In related news, G.I. Joe writer Larry Hama recently shared why he thinks it was the correct move to remove Snake Eyes' infamous mask in the new film. Speaking during a Comic-Con breakdown of the film titled "Unmasking Snake Eyes," Hama celebrated the fact that Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins explores "an entire history of Snake Eyes that I never really delved into" and "adds a whole dimensionality to the character that couldn't exist... when he was faceless and voiceless." He also praised the film's star Henry Golding as "somebody that can...bring a real gravitas to the role."

While Snake Eyes serves as the first installment in the latest franchise reboot, di Bonaventura also recently confirmed that more projects from the G.I. Joe universe are on the way. Specifically, the producer teased a Snake Eyes follow-up from Seberg screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, as well as a series centered on Lady Jaye, who was portrayed in the 2013 film G.I. Joe: Retaliation by Adrianne Palicki. There have also been talks about developing a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover film.

From director Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is now in theaters. It will be available to stream on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical release.
