Smokey and the Bandit will ride again thanks to Seth MacFarlane and Danny McBride.

The two are producing a television series based on the classic 1977 film that's described as "an epic adventure of family, small-town crime, unlikely heroes, legend and legacy." David Gordon Green, who co-wrote Halloween with McBride, will write and direct the pilot in addition to serving as an executive producer.

"Growing up in the south, Smokey and the Bandit was an iconic franchise for me. The legacy of these characters is a playground of swagger and sass that I’m excited to dig into," Green said in a statement. Other producers include Jody Hill and Brandon James for Rough House Pictures and Erica Huggins for McFarlane's Fuzzy Door label.

The original Smokey and the Bandit starred Burt Reynolds as the titular Bandit and focuses on Bandit and his friend Cledus "Snowman" Snow attempting to smuggle 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta.

Smokey and the Bandit is the latest McFarlane production that is born out of his partnership with NBCUniversal Content Studios. Other projects in the works include an animated reboot of Good Times and a limited series based on the novels The Winds of War and War and Remembrance.
