Fans of anime don't just watch anime for the cool animation and fight scenes. They watch them for the stories as well as the character development. Something all fans of anime can really get behind is romantic development. Although, it can be quite frustrating when two characters are in the will-they-wont-they phase.

The characters are often too preoccupied with the plot to even think about romance. It's pretty satisfying when characters fans have been rooting for finally get together. Most of the time, the pre-relationship phase stretches on for the entire series, but in that time the audience gets to see the characters grow as individuals and mature.

Most fans of anime are familiar with Winry and Edward since their relationship is a favorite amongst fans. Especially since Edward proposed to Winry in such an awkward way. For most of the series, they act no differently than childhood friends. They squabble like siblings, but they eventually begin to sound more like an old married couple. By the end of the series, the love they feel for each other is clear, which makes the proposal all the more fulfilling.

9 Keiko Had To Wait For Yusuke To Mature (Yu Yu Hakuso)

At the beginning of Yu Yu Hakusho, Yusuke is a thorn in Keiko's side. He is a delinquent who gets into fights and constantly skips class. Not to mention, Yusuke is incredibly immature and unwilling to accept that he has any feelings for Keiko. His role as Spirit Detective helps him mature, and Keiko's part in his life allows them to grow closer. It's not a surprise when they kiss in the final episode, but it's definitely something worth cheering for.

8 They Are From Two Different Times But Are Perfect For Each Other (Inuyasha)

Kagome and Inuyasha's relationship is a perfect example of opposites attracting each other. Even though she is the reincarnation of Inuyasha's previous love, Kagome is nothing like her. Not to mention, because Kagome is from modern times and Inuyasha is from the past, it's a miracle they were even able to meet.

For the entire series, they argue and fight with each other, but, even so, there is still a clear spark between them. With hundreds of episodes in the Inuyasha series, fans had to wait forever for them to get together, but seeing their relationship bloom is worth it.

7 Aang and Katara Grow To Love Each Other (Avatar The Last Airbender)

When Aang meets Katara, he is an immature kid. He's more focused on avoiding his responsibilities and having fun than finding romance. As the series goes on, it's clear Aang begins to develop feelings for Katara, but it isn't obvious if she returns them. Their relationship is so up in the air, fans debate who Katara should/would actually end up with. Aang won out in the end. They became the closest to each other, so it just made sense for them to end up together.

6 Orihime Is Afraid Of Ichigo At First (Bleach)

Ichigo and Orihime aren't an obvious match. Ichigo shares a lot of chemistry with Rukia, and for a time, Orihime is almost afraid of him. Looking back on the series, it's clear Ichigo and Rukia's relationship is closer to that of siblings'. While Orihime and Ichigo have a more intimate understanding of each other. While some fans are not happy with Orihime ending up with Ichigo, it's clear they care deeply for each other, so it ultimately makes sense.

When it comes to developing romantic relationships, the Naruto series is the worst at it. Naruto has a crush on Sakura for most of the series but is too immature to even consider that someone may like him, even though Hinata's crush is obvious.

It isn't until Naruto Shippuden that their feelings for each other really start to show, especially when Hinata confesses her feelings to Naruto while defending him. The wait for this relationship is mostly Naruto's doing, and when he finally returns Hinata's feelings, the fans are just as happy as she is.

Like many other male characters in anime, Tamaki is a bit oblivious when it comes to crushes. For most of the series, he thinks his feelings for Haruhi are fatherly and not that he is in love with her. It isn't until he is faced with the prospect of marrying someone else that he finally realizes his true feelings. Although Haruhi's feelings are a little less obvious, the fact that she chases after Tamaki in a horse-drawn carriage just shows how much she loves him.

3 Kenshin and Kaoru Share An Instant Connection (Rurouni Kenshin)

Kenshin and Kaoru's relationship is an old favorite amongst anime fans. Their chemistry is clear from the moment they meet, and even villains can tell Kenshin has a soft spot for Kaoru. It takes longer for Kaoru to realize her feelings for Kenshin as she is the younger, more immature one, while Kenshin is too heartbroken to move on. Fans were so set on their relationship happening, they were outraged when a Rurouni Kenshin movie had them dying from disease. The creators were smart enough to change this, and fans were ecstatic to finally see them get together.

2 Tohru and Kyo Are Perfect For Each Other (Fruits Basket)

Kyo and Tohru struggle a lot throughout the series, Fruits Basket. Kyo is convinced that he can never have happiness and Tohru just wants to do anything she can to help him. Kyo's feelings for Tohru really start to develop when she refuses to run from his cat form, and it becomes clear that she is willing to do anything to make him happy. Their relationship isn't one-sided either. Kyo helps Tohru build up her confidence and helps her recover from her mother's death. They are perfect for each other, which makes the ending of Fruits Basket all the sweeter.

1 Sango and Miroku Have A Strong Bond (Inuyasha)

Sango and Miroku is another couple that is constantly at odds. Most of that is Miroku's fault, as he is constantly hitting on women and grabbing Miroku's butt. At first, it seems like Sango is just annoyed at Miroku's lecherous ways, but it becomes apparent that she is also jealous that Miroku is giving other women attention. They both did a bit of growing up as the series progressed. Even though their relationship isn't in the spotlight as much as Kagome and Inuyasha's, they still develop a lot and form a strong bond.
