10 Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You

Kimi ni Todoke

Incorporating elements of romance and dramaKimi ni Todoke: From Me to You is a touching tale about an unlikely friendship (and more) between Kuronuma Sawako and Kazehaya Shouta. While the latter is extremely popular, the former struggles to make friends as she resembles Sadako Yamamura from 1998's Ring.

Putting aside the opening episodes of season 2 that are a bit infuriating to watch, Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You primarily delivers wholesome entertainment alongside some decent character development.

9 Barakamon

Seishuu Handa, a prodigy calligrapher, loses his cool when one of his projects is criticized. In order for him to mature, Seishuu is sent to the isolated Goto Islands by his father. Stuck in a community that does not give much importance to personal boundaries, Seishuu is required to step out of his bubble and interact with the energetic islanders.

Barakamon starts out as a fish out of water tale, but the anime does not dedicate too much time to Seishuu clashing with the other characters. Instead, Barakamon delivers a charming story that is relaxing and frequently hilarious.

8 Flying Witch

Makoto Kowata is a witch who, according to tradition, embarks on a voyage of self-discovery by reconnecting with nature. She ends up in the region of Aomori, as the witch attends school while just living a perfectly ordinary life that has an element of magic to it.

Flying Witch might just be the most grounded show about witches ever. The characters come across as real people, and there is no attempt to inject unnecessary drama or to heighten quirks to elicit laughs. Flying Witch is just nice.

7 School Babysitters

With a cast consisting mostly of toddlers, School Babysitters proves there is no such thing as too much fluffiness. After they are orphaned, Ryuuichi Kashima and his baby brother, Kotarou, start to attend a new school; however, the former must join the academy's babysitting club. Once there, Ryuuichi is accompanied by various other students and their respective younger siblings.

A surprisingly depressing backstory notwithstanding, School Babysitters is an adorable and emotionally engrossing slice of life anime that is constantly sweet.

6 YuruYuri

Consisting of three full seasons, each one better than the last, and a few OVAs, YuruYuri is a typical slice of life anime about four friends who form part of a school's Amusement Club. The anime's humor is along the same lines as Lucky Star, but YuruYuri focuses even more on the relationships between its main characters.

While it does take a few more risks than some other fluffy anime, as YuruYuri's girls are not especially innocent, the series never takes itself seriously or stops to throw out some unexpected tension. The storylines are always endearing and lighthearted.

5 Slow Start

Slow Start refers to the main character, Hana Ichinose, missing a year of school and having to attend a class filled with younger people than her. This predicament is made worse by Hana's lack of confidence, and she genuinely fears that her classmates will ridicule her for missing a year.

Luckily, this proves to be mostly a non-factor, as Hana quickly makes friends with a trio of optimistic and kind-hearted schoolgirls. While Hana's constant fear of being discovered is a bit unnecessary, Slow Start generally ignores it to focus on the lovable banter between its main characters.

4 Laid-Back Camp

What could possibly be more refreshing than a nice warm meal while camping in front of a gorgeous mountain? Laid-Back Camp is food for the soul. Each episode not only contains stunning landscapes that are inherently pleasant, but the anime also features a roster of characters who approach each adventure with a certain energy that is simply contagious.

Laid-Back Camp is delightful and grounded in reality, even if environments like Mount Fuji seem like they are from another world.

3 Usagi Drop

Usagi Drop's opening episode is tragic and uncomfortable, but these emotions eventually give way to one of the industry's most wholesome narratives. At his grandfather's funeral, Daikichi Kawachi learns that he had an illegitimate daughter, Rin Kaga. With the rest of the family giving her the cold shoulder, Daikichi takes it upon himself to become Rin's guardian.

Usagi Drop is filled with sweet moments that are completely earned. The relationship between Rin and Daikichi is simultaneously pure and realistic, permitting a viewer does not read the manga after finishing the anime.

2 Non Non Biyori

While not all fluffy anime emphasis nature, it tends to play a significant role in many of them. In Japan, these stories are referred to as "Iyashikei," which means "healing," and Non Non Biyori might be the best example of such a series.

Set in a quiet rural town, Non Non Biyori follows the totally mundane everyday lives of five students. Although there is a fair amount of character-driven comedy, Non Non Biyori is just as much about its setting. Be it the imagery, pacing, tone, or soundtrack, everything in this anime is relaxing.

1 K-ON!

the main characters from K-On together

K-On! does not have a cynical bone in its body. One of the most beloved "cute girls doing cute things" series, K-On! revolves around five girls who basically just want to make the most of their high school experiences. The characters also go through quite a bit of growth.

They are linked through the school's Light Music Club, but the anime is principally about the characters rather than the activities they take part in. K-On! is unadulterated fluff, and that is most definitely a compliment.
