Slender Man Movie Debuts Unsettling First Trailer

The first trailer for Slender Man, Screen Gems' anticipated feature film starring , has arrived, and it's pretty much everything you probably hoped for.

Created by Eric Knudsen, Slender Man is a fictional supernatural figure that originated in 2009 on the Something Awful forum, before taking on a life of its own and becoming a massive Internet meme. The black-suited character has since achieved a folkloric status, inspiring and appearing in stories, television series, video games and the popular YouTube series Marble Hornets.

Slender Man has also spilled over into real life, allegedly inspiring two 12-year-old girls to repeatedly stab their friend in 2014. Beware the Slenderman, a documentary directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky, combines home video, interviews with family members and footage from the 12-year-olds' taped confession to explore the case.

As the studio behind The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Hostel, as well as the Resident Evil and Underworld franchises, Screen Gems is no stranger to the horror genre.

Slender Man, directed by Sylvain White (The Losers, Stomp the Yard) and starring Jaz Sinclair, Joey King, Julia Goldani Telles, Annalise Basso, Alex Fitzalan and Kevin Chapman arrives in theaters May 18.
