Slender Man is headed to Hollywood. According to ComicBook.com, Screen Gems will develop a film based on the urban legend off a script by David Birke. The movie, which is set to enter production this fall, is currently eyeing a 2017 release.
Created by Eric Knudsen, Slender Man is a fictional supernatural figure that originated in 2009 on the Something Awful forum, before taking on a life of its own. The black-suited character has since achieved a folkloric status, inspiring and appearing in stories, television series, video games and the popular YouTube series “Marble Hornets.” However, Slender Man has also spilled over into real life, allegedly inspiring two 12-year-old girls in 2014 to repeatedly stab their friend.
Earlier this year, Slender Man was rumored to be the focus of “American Horror Story’s” sixth season, though the report turned out to be false.
As the studio behind “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “Hostel” and the “Resident Evil” and “Underworld” franchises, Screen Gems is no stranger to the horror genre. Birke also has a list of horror credits to his name, including the “13 Sins” remake as well as true crime screenplays for “Dahmer” and “Gacy.”
