Fans of Slay the Spire will be able to take the adventure on the go next week. The popular roguelike title makes its long-awaited Android debut next week, the developer and publisher announced today.

The announcement was hinted as far back as 2019, though that was the last fans had heard of the release. An iOS version was released in June 2020.

Using cards in Slay The Spire

Debuting in 2019, Slay the Spire quickly won over fans with its blend of punishing roguelike gameplay and intuitive deck-building. The game begins with a player choosing one of four characters, all of whom have various stats -- including health, abilities and a deck of attack and defense cards -- which are predetermined. Players must then work through the various levels of the titular Spire, only being able to continue so long as their health is not reduced to zero.

Losing all health results in the player being sent back to the bottom of the Spire, where they start over; however, it’s far from a game over. Players earn points that carry over and allow them to unlock new characters with new abilities, or new relics and cards, meaning each run has a chance of being significantly different -- for better or for worse. For those who are strong enough to survive the Spire, Ascension difficulty levels allow you to tackle a previous run with some detrimental effects, such as reduced health or stronger enemies.

Roguelikes have become a popular staple of gaming culture in recent years, thanks in part to the success of titles like Rogue Legacy and Enter the Gungeon. The titles won over gamers with innovative gameplay and stylish design, coupled with a challenging difficulty level that fed into the “just one more run” nature of Roguelikes. The most recent notable contender in the genre, Hades, topped many Game of the Year lists in 2020 (including our own!).

The game’s success on PC eventually led to it receiving releases for every major console throughout 2019, where it quickly became a favorite. Recently, Slay the Spire board game was announced, pending a Kickstarter campaign will which begin Spring 2021.

Alongside the announcement trailer, the publisher has issued a press release with further details about the upcoming release.

Today, Humble Games and MegaCrit announced that addictively fun roguelike card battler, Slay the Spire, will be released for Android on February 3.
