Amy Hennig's Marvel game was finally unveiled at D23, and it will focus on Captain America and Black Panther battling Hydra during WWII. The game will also feature two more characters for players to control. One of them is Gabriel Jones, who was a soldier during the Second World War and a member of the Howling Commandos. He was one of the first people to see Captain America in action. The other character is Nanali, a member of the Dora Milaje and leader of the Wakandan Spy Network. Both of these characters have comic origins, but Nanali may hint at a deeper story beat for the game.

While Captain America will more than likely be everyone's favorite boy scout, Steve Rogers, this game's Black Panther won't be T'Challa for obvious reasons. Instead, players will be taking on the role of T'Challa's grandfather, Azzuri, and both he and Captain America did meet during WWII in the comics. However, Cap isn't the only character in the new game that Azzuri has a deep connection within the comics. Nanali is an incredibly important character to Azzuri in the comics, and this game may be setting up a wonderful love story, a tragedy, or both for her character.

In the comics, Nanali is the queen of Wakanda and the wife of Azzuri. She was never part of the Dora Milaje as she is in the MCU, but she does encounter another Black Panther villain: Fritz Klaw. While the spelling of his last name varies, he is the father of Ulysses Klaw, who would go on to become another staple Marvel villain. Klaw's plane crashes in Wakanda, and Black Panther and the queen initially befriend him and nurse him back to health. Klaw is impressed with their vibranium supply and their devotion to Bast. He has the Wakandans build an idol of Bast and then he demands they worship it as a god rather than a kindred spirit. When they refuse, Klaw tries to kill Azzuri, but instead, he kills Nanali. In turn, Azzuri rips off Klaw's steel hand, and he flees back to Germany.

Based solely on the comics, it's possible there may be a deep story surrounding Azzuri and Nanali in the new game. It could show fans the origins of their relationship and unfold as a passionate and caring love story between the two. Players might get to see their budding relationship grow throughout the game and culminate in their marriage. On the other hand, this could also be about the tragic death of Nanali during the war. It's possible that players may control Nanali throughout the game only to see her tragic demise at the hands of Klaw. There is also the possibility that both could be featured in the game. Azzuri and Nanali may already be married when the proceedings begin. Players could see their relationship evolve, only to witness their marriage end as another casualty of the devastating Second World War.

Despite these potential story threads, it is still unclear whether the game will follow the plotline of the comics or not. While both Gabe Jones and Nanali have comic origins, the writers of the game may decide to start from scratch and create an entirely new narrative for them. Obviously, certain liberties will have to be taken to adapt the characters and story into a video game. This may allow the writers and designers to add to the admittedly limited tale of Gabe Jones and Nanali, in addition to providing a unique narrative with world-renowned characters like Black Panther and Captain America. Amy Hennig and Marc Bernardin are both working on the game, and they have proven to be excellent storytellers, so any story they tell will surely be amazing.
