Part of what has helped the Marvel Cinematic Universe endure for over a decade is its tireless ability to connect even the smallest details. Doing so showed how this world is more than connected films and shows but a living, breathing entity that evolved and changed over the years now. And one theory adds to that connectivity by theorizing how one alien species may have helped create SHIELD's most important gadget.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier revolutionized the MCU with its town and mature themes and advanced the universe's technology thanks to the photostatic veil, otherwise known as a nano mask. The tool allowed the Black Widow to disguise herself as a World Security Council member and infiltrate and expose SHIELD as being Hydra. Since then, it has appeared in Agents of SHIELD, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow, but according to Reddit theorist POLITEbrute, its first true appearance may have been in Captain Marvel.

Carol Danvers' space-faring adventure had her taking on the Skrulls, an advanced species best known for their ability to shapeshift. As masters of disguise, the Kree would often eliminate Skrulls with extreme prejudice, but that never stopped some from infiltrating high-level organizations like SHIELD. In the movie, one of the Skrulls that was killed early on is taken in by SHIELD and examined. At that point in the organization's history, they hadn't had first contact with an alien species, let alone been able to study it. However, with their studies and Fury's first-hand partnership with Talos, it's possible that was the start of the nano mask technology.

Alien physiology is hard to understand, but with the Skrulls being humanoid, the only true difficulty may have been understanding their shapeshifting capabilities. But because they can chance on a cellular level, nanotechnology served as a perfect substitute. Moreover, those micromachines could adapt to the user's predetermined face to make out their features on the veil material.

As far as how the veil could operate, SHIELD scientists could have studied how Talos and his wife shapeshift, along with how their skin changed like a wave going across the ocean. And, of course, that would explain how the nano mask changed as well. Since its creation, the mask was a go-to for many of SHIELD's most elite spies. Aside from The Winter Soldier, another iconic use can be found in Black Widow when Natasha disguised herself as Milena to get close to Draykov.

The nano mask is tech has yet to get in the hands of any enemy enterprise and is just as crucial to SHIELD as their many other skills in espionage. But aside from the narrative implications, if the tech were tied to Skrull physiology, it would prove even more so just how closely tied so many aspects of the MCU are.
