SITE NEWS: 'Comic Book Idol' launches today at CBR, Celebrity Guests announced, IDW joins prize package

Official Press Release

Los Angeles, C.A. - August 7th, 2003 - Comic Book Resources (https://www.comicbookresources.com), a leading comic book news and resource Web site, is proud to announce the opening of "Comic Book Idol," the all-new amateur art contest created by J. Torres, writer of the forthcoming "Teen Titans Go" series and author of the "Open Your Mouth" column at CBR.

What is "Comic Book Idol?" It's a five-week, five-round contest in which contestants will be asked to complete an art assignment each week by a deadline. Their art will be posted in a CBR forum designed especially for judges to post comments on and critique said art, as well as for CBR readers to view and vote on their favorites. CBR fans select which contestants move on in subsequent rounds, and two artists will be eliminated from the competition in each round until we have the one and only "Comic Book Idol," who'll receive some amazing prizes for the hard work accomplished during the competition.

In our first announcement we revealed that in addition to our regular panel of judges, who'll consist of Jamie S. Rich (Oni Press Editor-in-Chief), Ron Marz (CrossGen Senior Writer), and Joe Quesada (Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief) there would also be five guest celebrity judges. We're pleased to announce the following professionals have graciously accepted our invitation to join "Comic Book Idol." They are:

Round 1: "Oddball Comics" columnist and cartoonist Scott Shaw!

Round 2: "Wolverine" artist Darick Robertson

Round 3: "Savage Dragon" creator Erik Larsen

Round 4: IDW Publishing's Alex Garner

Round 5: "Wildguard" creator Todd Nauck

We've already announced that the winner of "Comic Book Idol" will be given three amazing opportunities within the industry: A short story assignment written by Ron Marz and art directed by Bart Sears to be published in a CrossGen comic, publication of a comic strip on the Oni Press Web site and Marvel EIC Joe Quesada handing your art samples to the Epic submissions editors for review. We're excited to announce one more prize! IDW Publishing (www.idwpublishing.com) has agreed to publish a pin-up by the winning artist in an upcoming issue of "CVO: Artifact." The subject of the piece will be decided upon by "CVO" creator Alex Garner and, if necessary, Garner will personally ink the pin-up drawn by the "Comic Book Idol" winner.

So you ask, "How do I enter?" It's easy! To enter, potential contestants must have samples of their work on a Web site or online portfolio. Contestants must have the ability to scan in their artwork and post it online to participate, and should be prepared to draw everything from a character sketch to actual comic pages. Contestants will be given approximately four to five days to complete each art assignment. Once you've got all your ducks in a row, post a link to your work on the official "Comic Book Idol" forum located in the CBR Forums (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/). This is a moderated forum, so your post will only appear when our moderators approve your post, which will happen multiple times each day.
