SiriusXM announced a new podcast about the origins of the iconic annual San Diego Comic-Con convention.

Comic-Con Begins: Origin Stories of the San Diego Comic-Con and the Rise of Modern Fandom will serve as an oral history of the event and will combine personal stories and wild anecdotes from both organizers and longtime supporters, dating back to the disorganized days of the first-ever gathering.

The Comic-Con Begins podcast is narrated by veteran sci-fi and horror film actor Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre, The Rocketeer). It will also feature contributions from the likes of Sandman creator Neil Gaiman, B-movie icon Bruce Campbell and film director Kevin Smith, as well as more than 30 founding members of the original San Diego Comic-Con.

Comic-Con was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention by a group of San Diegans that included Shel Dorf, Richard Alf, Ken Krueger and Mike Towry and was held for the first time at the U.S. Grant Hotel from Aug. 1–3, 1970. The event has been held every year since, with the exception of 2020 and 2021, when it was canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

While Comic-Con International: San Diego announced that it would host an in-person event over the Thanksgiving weekend, it confirmed in March that it likely wouldn't go forward with the event.

"Currently we do not know whether having this event in November is even feasible as we are still in the midst of the pandemic and while we are optimistic about Q4, we have not been privy to any specific information on large gatherings," the company said at the time. "However, it was our desire to have something in place for our fans who have longed for an in-person event. We truly hope that you will join us for this entry back into the world of in-person celebrations of the community we so love."
