WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Sirius the Jaeger Season 1, streaming now on Netflix.

Throughout the first season of Netflix's Sirius the Jaeger, viewers experienced several twists and turns as vampires spread their reach from Europe to Asia in the early 1900s. After they killed off virtually every werewolf years early during a massacre in Russia, it was left to a group of humans called Jaegers to stop the vampires from obtaining an orb of unlimited power called the Ark, and taking over the world.

As the story unfolds, we learn the lead Jaeger, Yuliy, is the last werewolf alive; there were actually two Arks; the vampires wanted the Ark to prevent their extinction due to a mysterious disease; and last, but not least, Yuliy's older brother, Mikhail, was turned into a vampire assassin. However, the bloodiest twist involves the man who founded the V Shipping Conmpany's Jaegers and acted as Yuliy's father-figure, Professor Willard.

Over the 12 episodes, we see the relationship between Yuliy and Willard as one that's similar to the one the X-Men's Professor Xavier shares with Cyclops and Wolverine. Sure, they're generals in countless wars to save the world, but there's an emotional and sentimental bond. That's evident in the way Willard cares for Yuliy, doing his best to ensure his werewolf side never takes control.

Early in the season, Willard is depicted in flashback finding a wounded Yuliy in the snowy hills of Sirius, Russia, in the immediate right aftermath of the massacre by vampire. Willard rescued the boy just as his powers first manifested, and just after he killed his first vampire. However, when an older Yuliy attacks a royal bloodsucker named Kershner, his enemy hints that Willard isn't what he seems. After killing the creature, Yuliy confronts his mentor, and it's then revealed Willard was the one who led the vamps to the secret location of Sirius, and orchestrated the slaughter of the werewolves.

It blindsides Yuliy, so much so that he isn't even driven to kill Willard. He's emotionally broken, as he's dedicated his life to serving the cause and avenging his family under the professor's watchful eye. A repentant Willard explains that he had been ambitious, and his ego allowed him to be recruited by the vampires to find the Ark. An archaeologist, Willard simply wanted the find of the century, and he was naive enough to think that when the vampires extracted the orb from Sirius, theey would allow him to guide them in using the Ark to change the world for the better.

But when they didn't find the orb following the slaughter (Yuliy's father had already left the village and hidden the Ark), the vampires betrayed Willard. They deemed him a failure and spared his life, taking the knowledge he'd provided and moved on without the scholar. After being excommunicated and left to die in the wilderness, he stumbled upon a half-dead Yuliy and nursed him back to health. Knowing the boy could be his ace in the hole in a fight against the vampires, Willard created V and built an army of Jaegers around him.

Yuliy is, of course, devastated because he realizes V's origin didn't come from a place of genuine care, but instead from arrogance. Willard manipulated him to transform him into a weapon so he could take out vampires -- not just to atone for the sins of old, but so he could restore his shattered pride.

Of course, as the years passed, Willard matured and sincerely became a guardian of the planet. But as it stands, the same way the vamps used him, he used Yuliy, which left the hero with deep trust issues.
