The following article contains spoilers from Sins of Sinister #1, on sale now.

The dark future caused by Mister Sinister has been set in motion in Sins of Sinister #1 (by Kieron Gillen, Lucas Werneck, Geoffrey Shaw, Marco Checchetto, Juan Jose Ryp, David Baldeon, Travel Foreman, Carlos Gomez, Federico Vicentini, David Lopez, Joshua Cassara, Stefano Caselli, Bryan Valenza, and VC's Clayton Cowles). In it, the titular character managed to take over the world within the span of a few years, and no one saw it coming. However, what makes it truly horrible is that he used Krakoa's chief export to help him do it.

Using the world's reliance on Krakoan medication, Mister Sinister tricked the populace into purchasing X-Genes that could be placed in people. In reality, the X-Gene would override their personalities with his own. His use of Krakoa's grip on the world of medical technology not only created a dystopian future but also revealed how Krakoa's best defense to maintain their autonomy could result in their own destruction.

How Mister Sinister's X-Gene Works

The issue saw Sinister use his puppets on the Quiet Council to share mutant medicine with the world. Specifically, he had them start giving humans access to the resurrection technology they had developed. Of course, the tech could only bring back mutants, so this meant everyone on Earth needed an X-Gene of their own to give them the genetic structure needed to be revived. This is where Sinister's tampering came in.

The X-Genes were originally made available to the public temporarily, and it was only intended to give them a backup plan in the event of their passing. Naturally, people began using them in droves, ensuring that within less than a decade, almost everyone on Earth would technically be a mutant. However, the X-Gene possessed a copy of Sinister's mind that could at any moment take over the host's body. Even if Sinister wasn't directly controlling them, the X-Gene exacerbated the host's worst traits, essentially making them just as sinister as the gene's creator.

Interestingly enough, what Sinister is doing exposes just how flawed Krakoa's model of the economy is, and also how foolish the world is to just accept mutant medication without question. As the sole exporters of their medical technology, the mutants have a monopoly, and a way to ensure their nation remains safe and needed by humanity. However, this leverage is entirely predicated upon the notion that they maintain the quality of their product. If the wrong medication is shipped out or somehow tampered with, the world would suffer immensely, and in turn, bring dire consequences for the island's nation.

This is the vulnerability Sinister exploited. He knew the world couldn't refuse the advanced medicine Krakoa offered. He also knew that they wouldn't question injecting themselves with the X-Gene if it meant they could live forever, counting on simple human greed to gain world domination. As sad as it sounds, Krakoa's best medical innovation in history ultimately unraveled the world and brought it to the brink of collapse.
