20th Century Fox has released the first teaser poster image for next year’s “Alien: Covenant,” the follow-up film to 2012’s “Prometheus,” Wednesday via Twitter. The image shows a sinister and shadowy close-up of the iconic xenomorph set against a simple black background, along with a foreboding one-word message: “Run.”
“Prometheus” presented the origin of the formidable species that has terrorized moviegoers periodically since the release of the original “Alien” film in 1979. The new poster is somewhat evocative of the one-sheet for that first film, which featured an alien egg against a similar black backdrop. The poster also officially announces the movie’s release date as May 19, months earlier than its previously announced date of Aug. 4.
“Alien: Covenant” reportedly tells the story of a colonial expedition’s crew who arrives on the planet where the synthetic construct David, a survivor from the “Prometheus” film, is residing. But they also encounter something far more dangerous than the comparatively friendly David.
“Alien: Covenant” stars Katherine Waterston, and also features Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Guy Pearce reprising their “Prometheus” roles. “Alien” and “Prometheus” director Ridley Scott also returns to direct the new film.
