Singer Says “X-Men: Apocalypse” Is Coming in 2016

Director Bryan Singer made heavy use of Twitter to keep fans updated during the production of 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and on Thursday used the medium to heavily suggest, if not officially announce, that an an Apocalypse-themed “X-Men” film is planned for 2016:

Singer, who also directed 2000’s original “X-Men” film and 2003’s “X2,” offered no further details, though a mere two minutes later, box office data service Exhibitor Relations tweeted that “X-Men: Apocalypse” has a release date of May 27, 2016, in information said to come directly from 20th Century Fox, who control the live-action rights to Marvel‘s X-Men characters:

“Apocalypse” most likely refers to the villain of the same name, first introduced in 1986’s “X-Factor” #6, and one of the most prominent antagonists in X-Men comic books. The character’s at the center of multiple famous stories, including much of the original “X-Factor” run, “The Twelve” and “Age of Apocalypse.” Apocalypse also played a major role in the Rick Remender-written “Uncanny X-Force,” and an “X-Force” film is currently in development at Fox with a script by “Kick-Ass 2” writer/director Jeff Wadlow.

Opening May 23, 2014, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” stars James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Halle Berry, Peter Dinklage, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Daniel Cudmore, Lucas Till, Omar Sy, Booboo Stewart, Fan Bingbing, Adan Canto and Josh Helman.
