Sin City 2, The Red Star, Ultra, Captain America: February 14th Comic Reel Wrap

Variety is reporting that the sequel will bow in 2007. Meanwhile, Comics Continuum caught the Frank Miller panel at last weekend’s Wondercon, where the creator said his new story about Nancy Callahan after Hartigan’s death “should surprise you. There will be some other short stories, there might be some Blue Eyes stuff.” Miller also said he’s involved in a “Hard Boiled” movie project.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to Christian Gossett’s award-winning comic book ‘The Red Star,’ setting ‘Night Watch’ filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov to develop with an eye to direct the fantasy sci-fi epic. Marc Platt is producing via his Marc Platt Prods. banner along with Bekmambetov via his Tengri banner, Jim Lemley and Jason Netter. Gossett and Ken Levin are executive producing.”

Variety is also reporting (subscription required) that “Lena Headey (‘The Brothers Grimm’) has joined the cast of CBS’ ‘Ultra’ as Penny. CBS Paramount TV show is based on the comicbook about a female superhero. Headey’s credits include ‘Imagine Me and You.'”

There’s a story in the Associated Press where Marvel movie mogul Avi Arad talks about bringing Ol’ Winghead to the silver screen as part of the production deal with Paramount. “Without giving too much away, obviously there’ll be a little bit of the origin and then we come into our real world,” Arad said. “What makes Captain America such a compelling character is that it allows you to judge history so you see where he came from and you see what he stood for.” Arad doesn’t expect that shield to be ricocheting off the walls of cineplexes before 2009.

The official site has been updated with more than 80 new photos and storyboards from the film. In other news, the film is the cover story for Entertainment Weekly, and ICv2 breaks down the contents, including controversial topics explored by the movie and the intra-company synergy between the AOL Time Warner business units working together to promote the film.

Speaking of “V For Vendetta,” The XVerse has this note: “Simon Kinberg has answered the latest batch of fan questions on our forum, and in doing so has hinted that the full trailer for ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ will appear with a ‘fanboy’ favorite in March. This further adds to our suspicions that ‘V For Vendetta,’ which opens on March 17th, will be the movie carrying the trailer before it.”

The team at Aquaman TV (also the makers of Kryptonsite) have a new note up claiming that Denise Quiñones, who was recently seen in the Smallville episode “Vengeance” as Andrea, the “Avenging Angel,” has been cast in the role of Rachel, a young woman who is a potential love interest for the A.C. character.

IESB talked to “it” guy Terence Howard, who claims that he’s still in talks to play antagonist Willis Stryker (also known as Diamondback).

IESB talked to creator Joss Whedon who put off more queries about who’d slip into the tiara. “We find out who is going to be Wonder Woman when they cast it,” Whedon said. “I am finishing the script now, I am a few weeks away from a draft, they’ll take a look at that and they’ll either say this is absolutely perfect for Paul Sorvino or they’ll say this sucks and hire somebody else, it’s impossible to say but I think in a few weeks time they should get a sense of what I am doing in the movie and then we can start talking about casting.” He did say something interesting about antagonists: “the villains are of my own creation. I don’t think Wonder Woman has the greatest rogues gallery in the world so I created someone of my own for her to come up against. It has to do with Greek mythology and the roots that the original comic was built on.”

Despite our site getting bonked for posting very similar images, now that the toy line has been seen at New York’s Toyfare trade convention, which shows all the characters from the show in all their 3D glory.

IESB has video of the entire press panel from Wondercon (Windows Media only) which we reported on yesterday. Not in the mood to fight Windows Media? You could just read the transcript over at Fanboy Planet. Finally, the NBA announced that actor Brandon Routh will play in the NBA All-Star Jam Session for Eva Longoria’s “H-Town” team.

For all of you who celebrate the Christianized version of Lupercalia, “happy Valentine’s day.” Back to business, here’s where you get in on the action. Did you see a link we didn’t catch? Have you snuck into a closed movie set, and have inside data? Maybe your cousin is dating somebody who knows something, and they had to tell you? Whatever it is, we wanna know it all — fire off an email and let us know whether you want your name used or your contributions to geekdom to go down anonymously. Broadcasting live from Los Angeles, this is novelist/karaoke host/all-around lunatic Hannibal Tabu saying thanks for your time and indulgence, and [tagline sent back to development hell until something hipper can be dreamed up].
