The Simpsons is usually a fun and goofy series, but there are the occasional dramas between the many opinionated citizens of Springfield. This may even extend to two of the town's most consistently goofy characters: Ralph and Clancy Wiggum. A Reddit fan theory suggests that Chief Wiggum isn't Ralph's father.

Springfield's inept police chief Wiggum and Ralph weren't initially introduced as father and son. This aspect of their home lives was introduced in Season 4, Episode 15, "I Love Lisa," which was also the first episode where Ralph had a major role. Establishing them as family made sense, since both were goofy yet well-meaning members of their respective communities. But one Reddit user argues that they're not biologically related.

The Simpsons' Families Sharing Appearance Is a Factor

Ralph and Clancy's heavier builds are similar, as is their natural enthusiasm; however, there are distinct physical differences between the pair. For instance, Ralph lacks Clancy's distinct nose and blue hair. Instead he has thin black hair and his mother's nose. Considering how similar in appearance many of the families of The Simpsons are -- such as the van Houtens -- it's notable how different the two Wiggums actually look.

While he doesn't look like Clancy, Ralph's hair does make him similar to another member of the Springfield Police Department: Eddie. Eddie, along with his partner Lou, are the only other consistent members of the police within Springfield. While The Simpsons gave Lou a memorable personality throughout the series, Eddie remains more or less undefined outside his role as "the third officer." But the fan theory would change that.

The theory suggests that, at some point, Eddie had an affair with Sarah Wiggum. The affair resulted in the birth of Ralph, making Eddie his biological father. It wouldn't be unlikely for Eddie and Sarah to have crossed paths given both of their connections to the police department, so the idea is plausible.

Could Ralph Wiggum's Biological Dad Be Eddie on The Simpsons?

Clancy and Sarah Wiggum have been implied to not be in the most fulfilling relationship, as seen in Season 21, Episode 18, "Chief of Hearts." This stagnant relationship could have motivated Sarah to look for another partner, settling on Eddie. Season 6, Episode 20, "Two Dozen & One Greyhounds" also joked about Clancy's reproductive organs being "withered and useless" after years of watching television, implying that Wiggum might not even be able to have children.

The greatest argument against the theory comes from a Simpsons episode set in the future. Season 23, Episode 9, "Holidays of Future Passed" featured Lisa's daughter Zia and an older Ralph, who was revealed to have taken his father's place in the Springfield Police Department. Sometime since reaching adulthood, Ralph's thin hair had grown in and turned blue, giving Ralph a greater physical similarity to Clancy. It would also be surprising and heartbreaking for this theory to be true considering how much Clancy cares for Ralph, treating him with the patience and understanding most of the world refuses to pay him.

There's even a way to read into Clancy and Ralph's relationship with this theory in mind. Clancy is often portrayed as one of the most enthusiastic parents in Springfield, doing his best to care for his son and encourage Ralph despite his unintentionally self-destructive behavior. If this theory were correct, Clancy could be seen as throwing himself into parenting because of a desire to be a good father -- even if it isn't by blood. While unlikely, it would explain why Clancy prefers Lou over Eddie, despite their sardonic relationship. But most likely, Clancy and Ralph Wiggum are indeed related.
