Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are famous for their chemistry as a dynamic duo in Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy. They started as Shaun and Ed in Shaun of the Dead, continued with Nicholas Angel and Danny Butterman in Hot Fuzz and ended with Gary King and Andy Knightley in The World's End. They acted together again in Paul, a screenplay that they wrote and later turned into a movie. However, the first instance of their on-screen friendship was in Spaced, a 1999 sitcom directed by Edgar Wright -- and the story behind the show's casting reveals a lot about Pegg and Frost's friendship.

What many fans may not know is that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were originally flatmates before working on Spaced together. A Guardian article from 2011 states that the two met when "Pegg's girlfriend and Frost were waitering in a restaurant. At the end of the shift, Pegg went for a curry with Frost and the rest of the staff." A 2013 Independent article also includes Pegg commenting, "We've gone from being flatmates and roommates and drinking buddies to fathers and husbands. We've moved away from each other and our friendship has always stayed as strong as it's ever been."

Spaced was created by Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes. Pegg already knew that Frost had comedic potential from seeing him creating and acting as specific characters to have fun with his friends. This is what encouraged him to ask Frost to join the cast of Spaced and thus created their on-screen buddy duo. In Pegg and Frost's Guardian interview, Frost states, "Well, I didn't think I was going anywhere in comedy. I was just a waiter, and I was happy doing that. Then I met Simon and he kind of forced me into doing it."

It's hard to imagine Nick Frost working as a waiter for the rest of his life, considering the fame he's accumulated from his previous roles. His performance alongside Pegg in Spaced was impressive enough to encourage Wright to cast both actors as the leads in the Cornetto Trilogy, which kickstarted both of their acting careers and landed them roles in bigger franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who.

This information definitely makes Spaced, Paul and the Cornetto Trilogy more enjoyable during rewatches, as the chemistry between Pegg and Frost is legitimate. Both men are incredible actors, but their friendship and their ability to work with each other in a comedic setting make their roles that much better. It also makes it incredibly hard to imagine Spaced, Paul and the Cornetto Trilogy without both Pegg and Frost, as Pegg with any other actor could have come across as less entertaining.

Success stories like this are always fun to read about, and learning about Pegg and Frost's friendship before their acting careers took off makes their earlier roles more fun to watch. It's also great that Pegg and Frost have stayed close friends since their original roles, and it raises the possibility of the two actors working on other exciting projects together.
