It has been rumored that Marvel executives have been planning to introduce the Silver Surfer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for months. However, it was previously reported that the astronomer-turned-cosmic wanderer would receive a Disney+ special presentation as opposed to a full-length show. In October 2022, it was reported that the Silver Surfer special would showcase the character in the far corners of the cosmos, not anywhere near Earth. The special was rumored for a release ahead of Fantastic Four, which suggested that the antagonist could appear in the highly-anticipated movie. However, this has not been officially confirmed by Disney or Marvel Studios.

Matt Shakman Will Helm the MCU's Fantastic Four

During Marvel Studios' D23 presentation in September 2022, it was officially confirmed that Shakman would direct the first Fantastic Four movie in the MCU. While Shakman was originally attached to direct Paramount Pictures' Star Trek 4, he departed that project to once again work with Marvel. The director alluded that the long-awaited Star Trek sequel wasn't moving forward fast enough, which is why he decided to sign on to helm Fantastic Four. In a previous interview, Shakman spoke about the difficult decision to switch projects and why he ultimately chose to return to Marvel.

"But movies have different journeys and momentums and schedules are a little bit mercurial, and so when the Fantastic Four opportunity came up, it was just too hard to pass up, and to go back home to Marvel, a place that I worked on WandaVision at, with those people who are wonderful collaborators," the director said. While Shakman is no longer directing the movie, Paramount has assured fans that Stark Trek 4 is still a high priority for the studio.

Neither Vision Quest nor the potential Silver Surfer show have a release date, but Fantastic Four is scheduled to hit theaters Feb. 14, 2025.
