Who Is the Silver Surfer?

Created by Jack Kirby, the Silver Surfer made his first comics apperance in 1966's The Fantastic Four #48. Coming from the planet Zenn-La, Norrin recieved the powers of the Silver Surfer from Galactus after agreeing to become the all-powerful being's herald. The agreement marks a long, strained relationship between the two characters, as Silver Surfer has often gone back-and-forth between being Galactus' herald and despising him deeply, neither of which are mutually exclusive with one another. While he's oftentimes seen interacting with the Fantastic Four, Norrin has also interacted with countless heroes from across the Marvel Universe and was even a late addition onto Marvel's very first Defenders team. The Silver Surfer made his official live-action debut in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, where he was played by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne.

In recent Marvel continuity, the Silver Surfer has once again found himself working with Galactus. Rather than being his herald, however, Silver Surfer becomes Galactus' "companion" and the two set off to explore a new corner of the universe called the Borderlands that was created in Fantastic Four #45 (writer Dan Slott, artist Farid Karami, color artist Jesus Aburtov and letterer VC's Joe Caramagna). Earlier this year, the character also starred in a Silver Surfer: Rebirth series from Ron Marz and Ron Lim, which saw him ally with Thanos in order to retrieve a stolen Reality Gem.
