The Silver Surfer has come quite a way since his time spent as the herald of Galactus. He's traveled the universe, defeated powerful cosmic beings, and defended Earth as best he could. These many adventures have helped establish Silver Surfer as one of the most popular cosmic characters in comics today.

In his many journeys, Norrin Radd has proven to be an extremely powerful hero. So much, in fact, that there is a good argument to be had that this cosmic surfer is the most powerful character in the Marvel universe. Here are the top ten reasons Silver Surfer is the most powerful Marvel character.

10 10. Defeated Mephisto

During his time spent on Earth, Silver Surfer gained the attention of the evil demon Mephisto. Norrin Radd was pure of heart, and there is nothing Mephisto wants more than a pure soul. Especially one endowed with cosmic abilities.

After capturing Silver Surfer's former lover from his home planet, Mephisto lures the cosmic hero to his realm. While there, Mephisto's power grows exponentially stronger. Despite this, Silver Surfer still managed to defeat the demon quite handily. A feat few Marvel heroes could hope to accomplish.

9 9. Knocked-Out the Hulk

The Incredible Hulk is one of the strongest beings in the Marvel universe. He has used his raw power to dispatch some of the most powerful enemies in the multiverse. Even with all of that power, he still pales in comparison to the power of the Surfer.

On one occasion, Silver Surfer knocked the Hulk off balance by launching his board at the green beast. Later on, in the same story, the Surfer simply rendered Hulk unconscious with a wave of his hand. Using the power cosmic, not only can Silver Surfer overpower the Hulk, but he can also send him into unconsciousness or simply drain all of his gamma radiation, turning the green giant back into Bruce Banner.

8 8. Thor Called For His Help

When forced to battle Durok the Destroyer, Thor found himself at a severe disadvantage. Having been an Avenger and also knowing many Asgardian warriors, the thunder god had many powerful allies to call for help. He instead called upon the aid of the Silver Surfer.

Although the Surfer was not strong enough to overpower Durok, he used his cosmic abilities and cunning wit to defeat the monster nonetheless. Grabbing Durok, Silver Surfer used his cosmic abilities to travel far into the future. Then, he left the beast there and traveled back, stranding Durok in a time where humanity no longer existed.

7 7. Survived Inside a Black Hole

On a few separate occasions, Silver Surfer has shown the ability to survive within the impossible harsh conditions of a black hole. Almost every being in the galaxy would die in such an environment, but the Silver Surfer thrives just as he would anywhere else.

On one of these trips inside a black hole, Silver Surfer fought the Red Shift. At the time, the Red Shift was the herald Galactus, imbued with the same Power Cosmic that Silver Surfer has. Without the help of his board, Silver Surfer managed to defeat the Red Shift within the Black Hole, proving not only is he a powerful being in his own right, but also that he is one of the most powerful heralds of Galactus.

6 6. Resisted Moondragons Telepathy

Moondragon in The Avengers

Moondragon is known as one of the most powerful psychics in the universe. To put things into perspective, she was able to put the world-class mutant telepath Charles Xavier in a coma using a very basic psi-bolt attack. When coming into conflict with Silver Surfer, Moondragon was not quite as successful. Although it took all of the energy he had, Silver Surfer was able to resist the telepath's attacks and then defeated her in combat.

5 5. Caused a Planet's Life to Evolve in Seconds

Bestowed upon him by the world eater Galactus, the Power Cosmic is the source of all the abilities of Silver Surfer. He can use this great power for devastating destruction or, on some occasions, to create and nourish life.

During one of his many cosmic adventures, Silver Surfer was forced to release massive amounts of cosmic energy. This energy was so powerful that, once it reached a nearby planet, it starting accelerating that planet's evolutionary processes. That planet went through a billion years of evolutionary cycles within mere moments just because Silver Surfer let released a little too much power.

4 4. Tricked Galactus With Telepathy

Although his telepathic resistance to Moondragon was incredibly impressive, there are a few other beings in the universe with more powerful minds. One of those such beings is none other than Silver Surfer's former master, Galactus.

Using his telepathic abilities, Silver Surfer was once able to alter Galactus' perception and deceived his former master with an illusion. Galactus is on par with some of the most powerful beings in the known universe, tricking him with illusion was no small feat.

3 3. Beat the Fully Powered Cable

Although the full extent of Cable's powers is usually hampered by the techno-organic virus he has contracted, at full strength, this mutant hero is god-like. During one of his stints as a god-like mutant, Cable found himself at odds with the Surfer.

Towards the end of the battle, it appeared as though Cable was going to win. He broke the Surfer's board and sent him flying with a powerful telekinetic blast. Silver Surfer then stood up, unfazed, and blasted Cable with a cosmic optical blast. The powerful beams obliterated Cable's arm and knocked the mutant unconscious.

2 2. Destroys a Planet and Defeats Morg

Morg Silver Surfer Galactus

Morg, another herald of Galactus, sought to kill the Surfer. Their battle raged on for some time, leading them to an uninhabited planet. As they tried to blast each other with their respective cosmic energies, a resulting chain reaction caused the planet to explode.

The massive explosion incapacitates Morg. Silver Surfer, on the other hand, is left standing, seemingly unaffected. Not only did he defeat another herald of Galactus, but he also destroyed an entire planet without causing himself any harm.

1 1. Bested His Master

Galactus and Silver Surfer look at each other in Marvel Comics.

Galactus was the one who gave Silver Surfer his power. If the latter would ever have any chance of defeating his master, he would have to use much cunning in addition to the full extent of his cosmic abilities. The Silver Surfer was able to succeed on both of these fronts, outsmarting, then defeating Galactus.

In issue #25 of Guardians of the Galaxy, Silver Surfer waited for Galactus to be on the brink of hunger. Then, with the cosmic behemoth at his weakest, the Surfer defeated him with a powerful concentrated blast of cosmic power. Instead of killing Galactus, Norrin Radd chose to use his cosmic abilities to satiate the being's hunger, then traveled with him again, all the while sustaining Galactus with his power.
