WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Silver Surfer: Black #2 by Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, Dave Stewart and Clayton Cowles, in stores now.
In Silver Surfer: Black #1, we saw what became of Norrin Radd after he was swallowed into a black hole back in Guardians of the Galaxy #1. The Surfer found himself lost inside a black abyss for what seemed like eons, and he eventually crashed onto a small planet where he came face to face with Knull, the God of the Symbiotes. At the time, we weren't sure exactly what this meeting meant given that, as far as we know, Knull is currently being held prisoner at the center of the symbiotes' home world, Klyntar.
Now, Silver Surfer: Black #2 gives us the answer. In truth, the black hole transported Norrin billions of years into the past, where he has just met a younger version of Knull. In doing so, the issue reveals the Silver Surfer's secret history with the the Klyntar, and their god.
It was in the pages of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's current Venom series that we first learned Knull was being kept prisoner by the symbiotes at the heart of the planet Klyntar, a word that, loosely translated, means "cage." In Silver Surfer: Black #2, it's revealed that, during his time as a herald of Galactus, the Surfer once found himself on Klyntar. There, he was swiftly attacked by the symbiotes, and taken beneath its crust, right to its core, to be a prisoner alongside Knull.
However, the Surfer fought his way out, and escaped the symbiotes' clutches. He didn't understand why at the time, but he now explains that he understood the Klyntar were afraid of him. Since this was his first interaction with them, Norrin simply had no idea why they were so frightened of him -- but now he knows that it's because he met their god once before... billions of years in the past.
Thanks to the black hole, the Surfer has found himself in the past, where he is giving Knull a run for his money. His cosmic powers are great, and they are enough to counter Knull's blackness to properly challenge him. Therefore, while the Surfer hadn't yet experienced this confrontation, it did eventually take place in the past. His battle with Knull is why, billions of years later, the symbiotes fear the Silver Surfer. He just didn't know it at the time, because he had yet to go back in the past.
It might sound a bit complicated and, to borrow the Doctor Who expression, "timey-wimey," but now the loop appears to have closed. Norrin now knows that the Klyntar are afraid of him because he "made their hidden god bleed." However, he's still trapped in the past, and with his powers fading, the battle against Knull isn't one that can be won alone. Thankfully, Ego the Living Planet has just arrived to lend a helping... head.
What could go wrong now?
