WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Silver Surfer: Black #1 by Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, Dave Stewart and Clayton Cowles, in stores now.

Marvel writer Donny Cates is weaving an intricate cosmic web. The scribe recently launched a new Guardians of the Galaxy series with artist Geoff Shaw, which led to the formation of a new version of the cosmic super-team. But it came at a great cost: In Guardians of the Galaxy #1, many of the Marvel Universe's greatest cosmic heroes were swallowed by a black hole created by the Black Order. Luckily for them, the Silver Surfer was around, and he used his great power to save everyone. Well, everyone but himself.

Now, in Cates and Moore's Silver Surfer: Black #1, we see the Surfer's side of the story. We see the inside of the black hole and his great efforts to save everyone. We see where he ends up and who he meets when he gets there. And that's when we realize just how sprawling Cates' cosmic Marvel plans are. Who does the Surfer meet on the other side of the black hole? Why none other than Knull, the god of the symbiotes.

Silver Surfer Knull 1093

Knull, the self-proclaimed god of the symbiotes and creator of the Klyntar, is a being as old as the universe itself. He debuted in Cates and Ryan Stegman's Venom series, which revealed the character's secret history and ties to the Venom symbiote. Since then, we haven't heard or seen all that much of Knull -- but now we know why.

In Silver Surfer #1, Norrin Radd uses the might of the power cosmic to save as many lives as he possibly can inside the black hole. Once he ends up swallowed into the void, he becomes lost in the black. In what appears to be a place outside of time and space, the Surfer falls for years. Until, finally, he finds a planet. However, he instantly notices that this planet is different -- that it's a dark and dangerous place.

He comes under attack from three creatures he recognizes as gods, but they have been turned, transformed into sentries by a much more powerful force. Finally, Norrin comes across their master: Knull, who appears to have made this planet his new home. But how can that be when, as far as we know, Knull is still trapped on the home planet of the Klyntar? By traveling through the black hole, could Norrin have ended up in another time period, an era when Knull still roamed free?

Then again, it's also possible that the symbiote god created another avatar of himself, a power we saw him exhibit in Venom.

Whatever the case may be, the meeting between the two is surprising and filled with possibilities. The encounter happens on the issue's last page, which means that we will have to wait for Silver Surfer: Black #2 to see the confrontation between the two. However, it's already clear that Cates' cosmic web is much larger than we anticipated. Now, he's tying his Venom, Guardians of the Galaxy and Silver Surfer series together. What could be next?
