Video game adaptations haven’t always worked, to put it mildly, but one of the most successful translations, for me at least, was 2006’s Silent Hill. A moody, atmospheric tale that was more about the lingering, disturbing terror than the immediate shock, Silent Hill was impressive in its adherence to the game’s visuals, featuring character designs and even precise camera angles that you would have seen in the original game. On that level alone, it was a great success.
A lot of that success owes to the work of director Christophe Gans, who apparently won’t be returning to that role for the just announced Silent Hill sequel. Bloody Disgusting reports that Solomon Kane director Michael J. Bassett is writing and directing Silent Hill 2: Revelation 3D, which centers on Heather Mason, the protagonist of the third entry in the video game series.

The sequel follows Heather Mason, along with her father, who have been on the run – always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.
No spoilers here, but I don’t think it’s revealing too much to say that what she finds is pretty screwed up. That’s how they roll in Silent Hill.
I’m less enthusiastic for a Silent Hill sequel without the participation of Gans, but I’m willing to give Bassett a shot. Am I alone in my praise for the first Silent Hill movie, by the way? I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece by any stretch, but as far as horror movies go, I was certainly unsettled, and I was impressed by how faithfully it adapted the game’s aesthetic.
